About MS
Mreža solidarnosti or MS translates literally as Solidarity Network. MS connects people who are facing injustice, pressures, or consequences of their social engagement with those who wish to provide concrete support. MS emerged from the need for a swift, direct, and responsible exchange of aid, without intermediaries and complicated procedures. Support is provided through donations, volunteering, and other forms of direct engagement. In that sense, solidarity within MS is not just a form of aid, but both a collective practice which challenges passivity and the normalisation of injustice as well as a shared action in situations where social issues cannot be reduced to individual responsibility. Today MS brings together donors, volunteers, various associates, and people in need of support through a collective belief that solidarity is not just an emotion, but is a collective practice.
How MS began
MS began as an initiative of a group of people from different professional and expert fields, who came together on the IT Srbija Discord server. MS arose from the concrete need of people to not be left to fend for themselves when facing injustice, pressure, or a lack of institutional support. MS offers support to people who have been exposed to economic and institutional consequences of their public engagement.
In the first phase of MS’s activity, solidary aid was directed at teachers who, due to the school blockades, had their incomes slashed as a form of institutional pressure and repression in education. However, repression did not limit itself to a single profession; it expanded and morphed into different forms across various parts of society.
That is why MS expanded its activities.
We are not changing our mission. We are expanding it.
Our activities
MS connects people who wish to offer support by giving solidary aid with those who need that support.
Today we are active in two areas of support.
For Education
Direct financial support to teachers, professors, associates, and others who are left without part of their income or without institutional support due to their public engagement.
Against Repression
Support for people who are facing fines, pressures, violence, or other consequences due to their social engagement in the public interest.
MS aims to secure direct support for people who are subject to pressures, injustice, and other consequences of repression.
How MS works
MS works according to the principle of direct solidarity. This means that support passes neither through a centralized fund, nor through a classical model of collecting and distributing resources.
Donations are passed along directly – from person to person – through a well-defined and transparent process. In other words, this is a peer-to-peer system. In that way, we build trust, limit space for abuse, and make it possible for aid to arrive quickly — when it is most needed. Distribution of responsibility is built into the very process of offering and passing on support.
Our model is based on:
- trust
- transparency
- responsibility
- security
- mutual support
Our mission
Our mission is to build a functional, reliable, and accessible model of direct support between people – a model that enables aid to arrive quickly, transparently, without intermediaries and when it is most needed.
MS exists to connect people in situations of institutional pressure and repression when institutions become the source of threat, and to show that the community can give a different response – through solidarity, trust, and organised action that builds the foundations of a fairer society.
Our vision
Our vision is for a society in which the individual is not left to fend for themselves in the face of injustice. A society in which people stand together and in doing so, shield the individual from arbitrary power or pressure. A society in which solidarity is not an exception, but rather the basic way of collective action and protection.
We are working toward a society in which trust is built among people, with support becoming accessible, direct, and tangible.
Principles on which our actions are based
We believe that:
- education must be protected as a public good
- people should not be punished for defending dignity, truth, or freedom
- support has to be accessible quickly, simple to understand, and without unnecessary obstacles
- collective action has the power to reduce fear, isolation, and pressure
Through its engagements, MS continually confirms that support does not have to be slow, distant, or abstract, but rather that it can be direct, concrete, and based on trust between people.
